J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle, Thursday 21st August 2025.

OTM/CULL COWS

A quality entry of cull cows saw an overall market average of 271p/kg.
Beef cows sold to 339.5p/kg for a Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son, Selside on 2 occasions with other better end beef cows regularly 290-325p/kg with top grossing being a Hereford from J & J Whalley, Hawes selling at £2466 with another at £2440 from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite.
Dairy cows sold to 304.5p/kg for Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Crag Farms, Kendal with others heavy and well fleshed cows 285-300p/kg with straight parlour cows 250-270p/kg. Top grossing being a heavy weight Holstein Friesian from WH Kitching & Son, Heslington totally £2293.
OTM beef heifers sold to 289.5p/kg and £2634 for a Hereford x from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal with dairy heifers to 324p/kg and £1571 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton.
Steers sold to 339p/kg from JE D JER Wightman, Carnforth and £2141 from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.
Cull bulls sold to 279p/kg and £3219 for Aberdeen Angus from Kirkby & Longworth, Dunnerdale.

STORE CATTLE - Waves and waves of trade.

It was a deep sea dive for store cattle today, with bidders plunging in without hesitation. Trade flowed like a rising tide with nothing let drifting, as prices surged across all classes of cattle.
GM Metcalfe Jnr caused the biggest splash, with a pen of four Limousin bullocks selling to £2500 at 23 months old. EW&RM Tower had a whale of a time, selling their fantastic run of Charolais, with bullocks sailing to £2440. The strong current continued for Aberdeen Angus cattle, J Holme & Son had a pair of steers cruise to £2360. The same good home also sold a Limousin bullock to a buoyant price of £2280. Heifers also sold swimmingly as buyers were circling like shark’s ringside, quality again from EW&RM Towers hit £2360 for a pair of heifers and £2180 for a shoal of seven. Plenty more were over the £2000 mark from this good home, who had a boat load in today.

STIRKS

A real buzz around the stirk sale ring today with buyers eager to secure replacement stock of all classes and types, with all vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved.
Steers sold to £1250 for eight month old Limousin cross and Angus cross from JR Pye, Stalmine. Closely followed by British Blues (8 months) selling at £1190 from JA Law, Carnforth. Younger 5 month old well reared Charolais x steers from JR Pye sold at £1010, with 6 month old Aberdeen Angus cross £920 from Messrs Young, Lindale.
Just a handful of heifers forward selling to £1050 for 6 month old British Blue cross from JS&I Wilson, Millom with 8 month old Limousin cross £930 from JR Pye, Stalmine. A pen full of seven month old Montbeliarde bulls sold to £1100 from JS&I Wilson, Millom.
More stirks are required at each sale to fulfil an ever expanding ringside of buyers orders.

Bull calves sold to £930 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross from SJ Middleton, Dent with British Blues to £900 from Bambers Farm. Also the top side of £800 were a further nine bulls from again Bambers Farm x5, CR Dickson x3, J&R Waller and SW&K Metcalfe. Month old calves sold to £710 for Limousins from BR Butterfield, Burton in Kendal with Aberdeen Angus at the same age making £680. Black and Whites sold to £470 from AK&BM Robinson, Kitchlow.
Heifer calves a flyer, selling to £870 from V&EJ Chadwick, Sowerby with Aberdeen Angus to £840 from R Cowin, Mansergh. Three British Blues sold to £810 from Bambers Farm with younger six week old to £800 from MH&AR Robinson, Kendal. Limousins sold to £740 from CM&CS Chapplehow with others to £710 from Langley Park, Millom. C Dean & LJ Brennand showed a sweet six week old Charolais to £710, with J&R Waller selling British Blues to £700 at the same age.
